The background was originally painted as my 28th year entry, though I left the face unfinished - my portrait skills were still developing, and my sense of identity, particularly in relation to myself as a nonbinary person, felt distant and blurry. 2 years later after journeying further into myself, I arrived at a clearer understanding of who I am beyond inherited expectations of gender. I felt liberated, I looked in the mirror and finally saw myself for who I truly was. On my 30th birthday I returned to complete the work - rendering the face alone. Created on a canvas stretched by someone who had caused me deep harm, it became an act of confrontation and reclamation - a meditation on heartbreak and the paradoxes that exist within intentions of love and care. The composition traces a cycle: one figure gazes tenderly at another, protective and luminous, while the echo of prior harm lingers below. Coats dissolve into architecture; a garment’s edge merges with a graffitied building, suggesting how intimate patterns between individuals influence broader social structures. Love and abuse appear not as isolated gestures, but as repeating forms embedded in both bodies and environments. Through this work I reflect on how we can be both redemptive and harmful towards another, sometimes simultaneously, how protector and oppressor can coexist within the same person. Love Binds holds that tension without resolving it, allowing the viewer to engage with it from a mindful place that allows grace, feeling, and understanding. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/699da604c900d5766bc59df6/9b782115-1c6b-4236-8061-1e1dc3662c6d/Feed_The_Dog_2024.jpg Paintings Feed The dog oil on canvas, 48 x 30", 2024 In Feed the Dog, I pursued an image that had been haunting me during an intense period of overwhelming anxiety. I kept dreaming of waking inside the mouth of a large red animal or demon, my heart racing each time. I chose to confront the image directly, giving my body a sustained, embodied representation of that fear, allowing me to process it and face whatever my subconscious was presenting. By the end of the painting, I felt a strange sadness in stepping away: the vibrancy of what had once been terrifying had transformed into something I understood. In that act of creation, my anxiety lessened, and I gained a deeper insight into myself - that I could be safe even while experiencing fear. A scene from the back of the Caledon property where I grew up. When I originally scouted it, I was unexpectedly chased away from the area by two large unidentified dogs. They gave way on pursuit once I crossed the creek, and it left me rattled to the core. It was the first time I felt danger in the woods that had been, since childhood, my refuge. I painted a gouache study hastily afterwards in my first sketchbook, back in 2019. Jump forward to late 2024. Having had accumulated a few years of practice I was elated to rediscover the photo reference in my backlog with fresh eyes. I took to a larger canvas (48” x 30”) and painted this piece in about two days worth of work. To revisit the same scene was enlightening, I felt much more capable of expressing the experience this scene lent to me. The feeling of being drawn into the landscape and hypnotized by its ebb and flow - even to the point where unwelcome company would go eerily unnoticed. The feeling that home is a fluid thing, that can transform when coloured by traumatic experiences. I’m left with an appreciation for the woods in my home, left with the feeling of being watched. The composition features a fawn that my mother’s family once found at the site of an accident on the side of the road. The raising of this deer came to represent my grandparents and eventually grew to encompass its own sense of mythology that lives on. Within our family its presence became a symbol of the triumph of love over pride and hope for new life even in times of grief. In this work, I explore how loss, myth, and familial legacy intertwine, using this symbol as a magical lens through which to honour the past.
